Crossroads - Anti-racism Training
The Leaders for Equity Anti-Racism & Reparations Now (LEARN) Committee would like to invite faculty to participate in the next cohort of Crossroads Antiracism Education and Training to be held February 26-28, 2019. Please note this invitation is only for faculty. Staff and administrators are also invited to participate in this Crossroads training, but will be invited through a separate invitation. LEARN supports the diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development objectives of the Title V Hispanic Serving Institution Flexible Learners grant, Student-Ready: Degree Completion for the Flexible Learner. We recognize that traditional models of diversity training often do not get to the heart of the structural basis of racism. In order to make the cultural shifts necessary to address the long history of structural racism in our society and in our educational systems, we must ask our colleagues to dig deep and do the hard work of facing our personal and institutional inequities. Up until this point approximately 150 of our colleagues have completed a Crossroads training and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The Crossroads approach is invitational and provides a common language so that our campus community can work together to become better colleagues and educators.
Workshop Description: Understanding and Analyzing Systemic Racism (3 days)
Participants will build a common definition of racism and explore the historic development of institutional racism in the US. They will examine ongoing realities of racism including the identity-shaping power racism has on People of Color and White people; explore racism’s individual, institutional and cultural manifestations; and consider the link between racism and other forms of oppression. A strategic methodology to dismantle racism will be introduced, focusing specifically on applying principles of organizing and social/cultural change.
- February 26, 9:00-4:00
- February 27, 9:00-4:00
- February 28, 9:00-4:00
Compensation: For full and part time faculty participants: $490.54 (8.5 hours) stipend plus 12.5 hours of FLEX time for participation in the full workshop and completing evaluation surveys.
If you would like to participate in the Crossroads trainings, you must commit to attend the entire workshop (including staying for lunch, which is provided, each day). Full-time participation is necessary in order to build a complete foundation for all participants. We hope to accommodate everyone who applies, but if the response is greater than space allows (40 people), participants will be selected to create a balanced cohort.
Acceptance into this workshop will be confirmed by the end of January. Please contact Elizabeth Imhof if you have any questions and we hope to see you at the workshop!
